AI Translation for WordPress — GPT-4o and DeepL, No API Key Required

Why AI translation matters for WordPress

Translating a WordPress site the old way means copying strings into a spreadsheet, emailing a translator, waiting a week, pasting the results back into your admin, and doing it all over again the next time you update a page. AI translation collapses that loop from a week to a minute, and for most content — blog posts, product descriptions, marketing pages — the quality is already at the level where human editing is a polish pass, not a rewrite.

Lang Forge is the WordPress translation plugin built from the ground up around AI. Not bolted on. Not a “Premium AI Module.” The AI buttons are right next to every editable field, and they work the moment you activate the plugin.

Three AI providers, no API key

You don’t configure anything.

Most other WordPress AI translation plugins ask you to bring your own OpenAI or DeepL API key. Then they ask you to pick which model. Then they meter your usage twice — once through the plugin license, once through your provider’s billing. Then they fail silently when your key hits its rate limit.

Lang Forge handles all of that server-side. Every AI translation request goes through our managed backend. We hold the keys, we pay the provider, and you see a single credit balance in your dashboard — topped up with a one-time 100-credit bonus at license activation and pay-as-you-go packs that never expire.

Current providers wired in:

  • GPT-4o — OpenAI’s flagship model, used by default for long-form content
  • DeepL — the gold standard for formal European languages and for European-language → European-language translation

The plugin automatically routes each request to the best provider for the language pair. If DeepL supports the pair and the content is factual, DeepL runs it. If it’s marketing copy or a language DeepL doesn’t cover well, GPT-4o takes over.

Three translation modes

Per-segment, bulk, or background.

Per-segment AI translation. Inside the visual editor, every field has an “AI” button. Click it, the field is translated, you review and save. This is the default mode for careful review of high-value content like the homepage, landing pages, and product pages.

Bulk AI translation. From the Posts list, select posts and choose “AI Translate” from the bulk actions dropdown. Lang Forge shows an estimated credit cost before you confirm. You approve, and the job runs.

Background AI translation. For large sites (hundreds or thousands of posts), Lang Forge queues the job and processes it via WP Cron in batches. You can close your browser. You can refresh the page an hour later and see progress. Failed translations are retried automatically with exponential backoff.

AI translation quality check

An AI that checks its own work.

A major concern with automatic translation is silent errors — a sentence gets dropped, the tone shifts mid-paragraph, a product feature gets mistranslated as its opposite. Lang Forge runs a second AI pass after every translation to catch exactly those problems.

The quality check scores the translation from 0 to 100 on four criteria:

  • Completenessare any sentences from the original missing in the translation?
  • Meaning preservationdoes the translation say what the original says, or has the AI drifted?
  • Tone matchformal vs casual, technical vs marketing — does it match?
  • Grammar and orthographyis the output correct by the standards of the target language?

For every issue flagged, you get a one-click “Fix” button that asks the AI to regenerate just that sentence, with the original context and the detected issue as guidance.

Works with every kind of WordPress content

  • Posts, pages, and custom post typestitle, content, excerpt, featured image alt text
  • ACF / Field Forge fieldscommon text, WYSIWYG, repeater, flexible content, group, gallery, relationship, and media values
  • Elementor Free/core widget contentAI reads widget data at the widget level, not as raw HTML; Elementor Pro and third-party widget packs need target-site QA
  • Gutenberg blockstranslatable attributes are identified and translated, block structure is preserved
  • WooCommerce productstitles, descriptions, attributes, variation names, category descriptions
  • Taxonomiescategory names, tag names, term descriptions
  • Menusmenu item labels
  • Commentsauto-translated to the reader’s language at render time
  • Strings from themes and pluginsany registered translatable string, bulk or individual

Glossary-aware AI translation

If you’ve defined a glossary — brand names, product names, industry terms that should never be translated — Lang Forge passes that glossary to the AI with every request. The AI leaves those terms alone. If a term appears in the result that violates the glossary, it’s flagged in the visual editor so you can fix it.

Cost estimation before every bulk job

Before you kick off a translation of 200 posts, Lang Forge tells you what it’s going to cost. Not after. Not retroactively. Up front, based on the actual character count of the content you selected.

You can decide: run it all, run a subset, or switch to a cheaper provider for the less critical content.

How much does AI translation cost in credits?

As a rough guide on Lang Forge’s default models:

  • A typical 1,500-word blog post → ~5 credits
  • A product description (200 words) → ~1 credit
  • A short UI string → <1 credit (rounded up to 1)
  • A 300-word landing page section → ~1 credit
  • A full site audit and bulk translation of 100 posts → ~500 credits

Every paid license — Personal ($54/year, 1 site), Professional ($114/year, 5 sites), or Agency ($174/year, unlimited sites) — includes a one-time 100-credit bonus at first activation, enough for ~20 average blog posts. When you need more, pay-as-you-go packs start at $3 for 250 credits and scale up to $149 for 25,000. Packs never expire.
