Content Diff — GitHub-Style Change Tracking for Translations

The outdated translation problem

You translate a blog post into five languages. A month later, you update one paragraph in the original. Now all five translations are subtly wrong — they’re missing the update. If you don’t catch it, your site drifts: some languages have the new info, some don’t, and visitors in different markets see different products.

Most WordPress translation plugins leave this problem unsolved. You get a vague “source has changed” warning, but no way to see what changed. Your translator has to diff the old and new versions manually — or, more often, just retranslate the whole post.

Lang Forge shows you exactly what changed, at the word level, in a visual diff that looks like GitHub’s.

How content diff works

When the original changes

Every time you save a post in the source language, Lang Forge snapshots the current content. If translations exist, each translated version is flagged as “needs update” and the diff against the previous source snapshot is computed.

The visual diff

Open a translated post whose source has changed. A notice appears at the top: “The source has been updated. See what changed.” Click it to reveal the diff.

The diff is word-level, color-coded:

  • Greenwords added in the new version
  • Redwords removed from the old version
  • Unchangedthe rest of the content, for context

If only the meta description changed, only that field’s diff opens. If multiple fields changed (title, content, excerpt, ACF fields), each shows its own diff in the same view.

Mark as current

Once the translator updates the translation, they click “Mark as current” to confirm the translation matches the new source. The “needs update” flag is cleared and the content diff is dismissed.

Optional: automatic re-translation with AI based on the diff, so only the changed portion is sent through the AI pipeline — cheaper and more precise than re-translating the whole post.

Notifications for translators

If your site has the Translator role in use (an included Lang Forge role with limited permissions), translators get an email notification when a source post they’ve previously translated is updated. The email includes a direct link to the diff view.

Content diff in the dashboard

The Lang Forge dashboard has a widget showing “Translations needing update” — a live count of every translated post whose source has changed since the last translation pass. Click through to see the full list, filter by language, and tackle them one by one.
