WPML’s pricing looks simple on the pricing page and becomes complicated the moment you install it. The Multilingual Blog tier ($39/yr) doesn’t include WooCommerce support, string translation for the admin, or the Advanced Translation Editor. For a real production site you need Multilingual CMS ($99/yr) at minimum. If you want Automatic Translation you pay separately, per-character, on top of your license.

AI translation is built in. It runs through our own backend, using GPT-4o and DeepL under the hood. You never paste an API key. You never get a bill from OpenAI. WPML added automatic translation in 2020. It works, but you’re managing it yourself: you connect OpenAI or DeepL with your own key, you pay them per token, and you track usage across two separate dashboards. For agencies managing dozens of client sites, this quickly turns into a billing headache.

The frontend editor is the flagship feature of TranslatePress, and Lang Forge ships it alongside WPML-style split-screen editing.
WPML has the Advanced Translation Editor, which is a split-screen admin editor. It’s good. But there’s no frontend click-to-translate. For that, you need to install a separate plugin or pay for TranslatePress on top of WPML.
Full translation memory in every paid plan. SHA256 exact matching for strings you’ve already translated, 75% fuzzy matching for near-identical strings, auto-suggestions in the visual editor, and WP-CLI bulk population.
Translation memory is part of the Advanced Translation Editor in WPML’s CMS and Agency tiers. It works, but the feature parity with professional TMS tools is limited and the UI is dated.
Both plugins support the main page builders, SEO plugins, custom fields plugins, WooCommerce, forms, and LMS plugins. WPML has been around longer and has more third-party add-ons documented on its site.
