Lang Forge vs WPML — Modern WordPress Translation

Lang Forge is the AI-native WPML alternative — AI translation with no API key, a visual side-by-side editor, and translation memory, from $49/year.

WPML has been the default WordPress multilingual plugin for over a decade. It's battle-tested, it has a huge ecosystem, and it's still the plugin every agency reaches for by habit. But it's also showing its age: a dated admin UI, an add-on pricing model that adds up fast, and AI translation that was bolted on in 2023 and still requires you to bring your own OpenAI key.

WPML has been the default WordPress multilingual plugin for over a decade. It’s battle-tested, it has a huge ecosystem, and it’s still the plugin every agency reaches for by habit. But it’s also showing its age: a dated admin UI, an add-on pricing model that adds up fast, and AI translation that was bolted on in 2023 and still requires you to bring your own OpenAI key.

Lang Forge is the modern alternative — built AI-first, priced flat, and shipped with a WPML compatibility layer so you can migrate without rewriting your theme.

Pricing: flat vs layered

Lang Forge pricing

Three tiers, every feature in every tier:

  • Personal$54/year, 1 site
  • Professional$114/year, 5 sites
  • Agency$174/year, unlimited sites

Everything — AI translation, visual editor, translation memory, glossary, WooCommerce multilingual, 30+ integrations, REST API, WP-CLI, XLIFF export — is in every plan.

WPML pricing

WPML’s pricing looks simple on the pricing page and becomes complicated the moment you install it. The Multilingual Blog tier ($39/yr) doesn’t include WooCommerce support, string translation for the admin, or the Advanced Translation Editor. For a real production site you need Multilingual CMS ($99/yr) at minimum. If you want Automatic Translation you pay separately, per-character, on top of your license.

When you add it all up, a typical WPML deployment with automatic translation costs between $99 and $250+ per year depending on volume. Lang Forge Professional at $114/year is flat and predictable.

AI translation: managed vs BYO API key

Lang Forge

AI translation is built in. It runs through our own backend, using GPT-4o and DeepL under the hood. You never paste an API key. You never get a bill from OpenAI. Every paid license includes a one-time 100-credit welcome bonus at activation; pay-as-you-go top-up packs ($3 / 250, $9 / 1,000, $35 / 5,000, $149 / 25,000) never expire.

WPML

WPML added automatic translation in 2020. It works, but you’re managing it yourself: you connect OpenAI or DeepL with your own key, you pay them per token, and you track usage across two separate dashboards. For agencies managing dozens of client sites, this quickly turns into a billing headache.

Visual editor: TranslatePress-style vs admin-only

Lang Forge

Two visual editors in one plugin:

  • Split-screen admin editor for focused work on long posts
  • Frontend click-to-translate editor that lets you click any text on your live page, translate it in a popup, and save without reloading

The frontend editor is the flagship feature of TranslatePress, and Lang Forge ships it alongside WPML-style split-screen editing.

WPML

WPML has the Advanced Translation Editor, which is a split-screen admin editor. It’s good. But there’s no frontend click-to-translate. For that, you need to install a separate plugin or pay for TranslatePress on top of WPML.

Translation memory: included vs upsell

Lang Forge

Full translation memory in every paid plan. SHA256 exact matching for strings you’ve already translated, 75% fuzzy matching for near-identical strings, auto-suggestions in the visual editor, and WP-CLI bulk population.

WPML

Translation memory is part of the Advanced Translation Editor in WPML’s CMS and Agency tiers. It works, but the feature parity with professional TMS tools is limited and the UI is dated.

Integrations: 30+ vs…

Both plugins support the main page builders, SEO plugins, custom fields plugins, WooCommerce, forms, and LMS plugins. WPML has been around longer and has more third-party add-ons documented on its site. Lang Forge covers the common integration surfaces natively — verified core paths include Elementor data copy/cache refresh, ACF/Field Forge values, Yoast/Rank Math/AIOSEO/SEOPress metadata, WooCommerce product metadata, CF7/WPForms metadata copy, and LearnDash relationship remapping. Other page builders, form add-ons, and WooCommerce extensions are compatibility targets that should be verified per site. See the full integrations list →

Migrating from WPML to Lang Forge

The WPML compatibility layer

Lang Forge implements the main WPML template functions:

  • icl_get_languages()
  • icl_object_id()
  • icl_get_current_language()
  • icl_get_default_language()
  • icl_language_selector action

If your theme or custom plugins call these functions, they keep working after migration. No template rewrite required.

Data import

Lang Forge can import existing WPML translations via WP-CLI:

wp langforge import --from=wpml

Your existing translated posts, strings, and language configuration are read from WPML’s database tables and written into Lang Forge’s own tables. Posts in your source language stay untouched. Translated posts are preserved. Your site keeps running during the migration.

Migration scope note: WPML Translation Management jobs, Advanced Translation Editor history, translator assignments, review statuses, baskets, proprietary add-on settings, and workflow metadata are not converted into Lang Forge workflow state. Keep WPML installed but inactive until you verify content, strings, menus, page builders, WooCommerce flows, and any custom WPML hooks.

Recommended migration flow

  1. Back up your database
  2. Install Lang Forge (alongside WPML, they don’t conflict during migration)
  3. Run wp langforge import --from=wpml
  4. Verify translations appear correctly
  5. Deactivate WPML
  6. Test your theme and custom functionality
  7. If everything works, delete WPML

Most sites migrate in under an hour.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

For most sites, yes. The WPML compatibility layer covers the template functions theme developers use most often. Complex custom integrations may need adjustments — contact us if you’re unsure.

Lang Forge includes WooCommerce multilingual in every plan — free and paid — and covers core product translation, product meta sync, store pages, cart language switching, and WooCommerce string translation. Advanced WooCommerce extensions, custom checkout plugins, subscription/booking flows, and store-specific email customizations should be treated as beta/manual QA until tested on your site. See the WooCommerce feature page →

Yes. No API key. No per-token billing. Every paid plan comes with a one-time 100-credit welcome bonus at activation; top-up packs never expire.

Technically yes, but it’s not recommended. The two plugins maintain their own language configuration and translation data. For a clean setup, migrate fully.
